Pack Like A Professional

BEFORE YOU PUT YOUR THINGS IN STORAGE, be sure to pack them correctly. Using the right materials will make your job easier, protect your goods and keep things organized until you are ready to unpack.

  • Fill all cartons so they are packed tightly. DO NOT over pack or under pack. Bulging cartons tip when stacked; half-full boxes tend to collapse. Keep all cartons (large and small) under 50 lbs. for ease in handling. Use wrapping paper, bubble wrap or packing peanuts to fill in empty spaces.

  • Try packing heavy items (such as books and tools) in small boxes or in closed plastic bags.

  • Wrap breakable items (such as cups, dishes and other small objects) in wrapping paper before packing them in boxes. Be sure all boxes containing breakable items are marked “Fragile”. Label all cartons so you will know where everything is when you need it.

  • Use bubble wrap to cushion fragile items also, such as TVs and small appliances.

  • Put clothes from your closet directly into wardrobe boxes to keep them clean and pressed while in storage. You can hang and store draperies and curtains in wardrobe boxes as well.

  • Mirror boxes work well in packing large pictures, posters, paintings and mirrors. Make sure there is enough padding around the item before placing in the box.

  • Lamps and lampshades should be packed separately. Large (and extra-large boxes) can be used for lampshades.

  • Store mattresses and box springs in mattress bags to keep them clean and damage-free.

  • Keep goods off the floor and away from the walls. Stack boxes on wood pallets that we provide free for your use.

  • Protect belongings in storage with paper pads, cotton or wool blankets or sheets. DO NOT USE VINYL OR PLASTIC to cover your belongings. Condensation will develop on the underside, which causes mildew to form as the weather warms up.

  • Always place lighter, more fragile items on top of heavier objects (whether you are packing a box or an entire storage room).

  • Place items you will need to use frequently (or in the near future) close to the storage room door.

  • Store all TV’s, VCRs, tools, and other expensive items in back of the storage unit.

SOME ITEMS THAT NEVER SHOULD BE PLACED IN STORAGE

  • Perishable foods
  • Live animals and plants
  • Jewelry, furs, cash and other valuable items
  • Explosives and flammable liquids (drain all gasoline engines)
  • Items that give off noxious odors
  • Liquids that may leak, spill or freeze and break the container
  • Any illegal or stolen property

COLD WEATHER STORAGE ADVICE

Before storing a washing machine, tip it on the side to empty any water from the pump to avoid  freezing.

BE LOCK SMART

Use weatherproof and plastic coated locks. Lubricate all locks and make sure each has a  drainhole. Stop in the office with your lock (during business hours) and we will be glad to lubricate it for you.
